When visiting a desert city, it may not seem like water activities like kayaking would be possible, but that is a huge misconception! Scottsdale’s surrounding area has incredible opportunities to kayak in Arizona on desert waters. Some lakes are more centrally located, while others require a day trip, but regardless of the location, Arizona kayaking experiences are like no other. Check out our suggestions for kayaking in Arizona waters below!
Tempe Town Lake
Just a hop and a skip away from Scottsdale, Tempe Town Lake, located in Tempe and home to ASU, offers kayakers both experienced and inexperienced an opportunity to paddle across an expansive lake with a beautiful view of the city, the skyline, and so much more. Take your partner or a friend and rent a double kayak for just $33 an hour.
Saguaro Lake Ranch Kayaking and Tubing
Another neighboring city, Mesa, offers kayaking in the Salt River, which is part of the Tonto National Forest. Kayakers can get away from the heat and take a trip down the river lasting from 2 to 4 hours. Pick up a single kayak and be prepared to paddle alongside adults, as there is a minimum age requirement. Sign up online and pay $40 for a 2-hour trip!
Little Colorado River
Take a daytrip to the small town of Winslow, Arizona to kayak in this desert dry wash river. This long stretch gives kayakers a mild ride down its waters and has much popularity with kayakers for that reason! Bring or rent your own kayak when you head up to Winslow—and maybe wait for a good rain as the dry wash can gain some more speed afterward—then enjoy this natural phenomenon.
The Colorado River
Reaching this destination, which sits on the Nevada/California, border takes a little more time investment but proves completely worthwhile. Launch from Lake Mead National Recreation Area near the Hoover Dam and be prepared to do some planning beforehand, as reaching the launch site takes time. The Colorado River is great for experienced kayakers. However, for newcomers, an Arizona kayak tour exists in Yuma to get your adventure started!
