No matter where you live, fall is an exciting time of year. The temperatures start to drop, the leaves change color, and pumpkin spice EVERYTHING is back in season. But fall in Flagstaff is an even more wonderful place to visit, especially for the desert dwellers still sweltering in the Phoenix metropolitan area! We who live in Scottsdale and Phoenix understand that OUR fall doesn’t really happen until December, but it only takes a short drive to get to the true autumnal beauty of Flagstaff!
What’s the Weather Like?
In a word? FABULOUS! Cool days and chilly nights make Flagstaff a paradise for everyone who is tired of hot, sweaty, and sticky summertime weather. Now is the time to bring out those beautiful sweaters, jackets, and boots you’ve been storing all year long. By September, you can expect highs in the mid-70s and lows in the low 40s, with October dropping temperatures 10 degrees, and November dropping another 10 degrees from that. Hot cider and pumpkin muffins start tasting mighty good right around now!
What to Do During the Fall
There’s always a lot to do in Flagstaff anyway, but fall is when the real fun begins! This is an amazing time to hike or bike the many trails found in and around the town, especially as the leaves turn from dark green to vibrant reds, brilliant golds, and stunning oranges; just try not to trip as you walk with your face turned to the sky, trying to soak in the brilliance of fall in Flagstaff!
This is a good time for festivals as well, starting with Wine in the Woods on September 11, the Cornucopia Fall Festival on September 24th, and Flagstaff Oktoberfest on October 1st. There are so many more fun fall festivals, we don’t have room to name them all!
The same chairlifts that bring you to your favorite ski runs in the winter are put into use for rides through the colorful leaves throughout mid-October. This is something we try every year; the sheer beauty of an autumn day in Flagstaff never pales.
This college town also offers you the opportunity to take in a homecoming game at Northern Arizona University—a treat for sports enthusiasts. Additionally, you can check out the craft beer offerings at the many pubs and bars that dot the landscape. It’s a college town, remember?
